Back to School: 2021

Back to school time this year was a mix of excitement, apprehension and the unknown.

BacktoSchoolShoppingCoco
Coco and I went school supply shopping. She had a blast choosing fun colored notebooks and folders which was a change from GCA as the school ordered supplies for you. We also shopped for the boys' stuff as well because apparently middle school boys have very little interest in notebooks and binders.

MeettheTeacher
The Elementary School had back to school morning on Monday. We arrived home from The Netherlands at 10:00 on Sunday night and jumped right back into things on Monday morning! Cora's teacher for third grade is Mrs. Tedder! Cruz had Mrs. Tedder for first grade when we previously attended Sarasota Christian. The Middle School had their back to school night in the evening. It was pouring down rain as we ran around campus following the boys' schedules and finding all their classrooms! I didn't get a picture!

Eighth Grade:
With all the craziness going on, I think it's really just hitting me that Rowan is in eighth grade. Its kind of unbelievable honestly. Rowan is excited about his schedule. He chose choir for his music elective and already loves the choir teacher. He is in honors math, which is Algebra I, which he's excited about. A lot of the middle school teachers are male which is fun and the eighth graders are allowed special privileges like chewing gum, using the Keurig coffee machine and several other things. Rowan seems to like the boys in his grade- he remembers several from his previous days at SCS and there are some new boys as well. Row is playing flag football this fall so he stays two hours after school for practice for that.

Sixth Grade:
Cruz is an official middle schooler and is ready for the challenge. He chose band for his music elective and intro to stem for his choice elective. He ranked several musical instruments (trumpet, drums) and he'll find out soon which he'll get to play this year. Cruz is also in advanced math. He has several of the same teachers as Rowan including a bunch of male teachers as well, which he's excited about. Cruz has the same exact schedule as several other boys so he's been hanging around with them. He also remembers several kids from his previous time at SCS. Cruz s playing flag football along with Rowan. It's so fun that they have each to try this new sport with!

Third Grade:
Our little social butterfly was SO ready to be back. She was excited to have Mrs. Tedder as her teacher and came home with a long list of new friends. Cora is very excited to have an agenda this year to keep track of all of her assignments and she's looking forward to learning multiplication and division! Not school related but Cora also found out that she made a dance company called Gershwin at her new dance school. The school has ten competitive teams in their program and Miss Coco made the fourth one. She is the only third grader in her group. The rest of the girls are in fourth through six grades. I know God has a plan for placing her where He did.

MSBlazerFest
Gotta love the Florida humidity! On the second day of school, the boys had something called Blazer Fest. Basically it was a day of inflatables, water slides, laser tag, sports, games, popsicles and a cook out designed to help the students get to know each other better and enjoy a day of play!

I'm excited that the school year is underway although I wasn't ready for summer to end. The anticipation, as it often is, was tougher than the actual first day. I'm so incredibly proud of my kids. They are brave and resilient and those qualities will serve them so well in the future.

Summer Vacation: Amsterdam Part II

Zaanse Schans and Volendam:

We rented a car for the remainder of our trip and ventured out of Amsterdam!

Amsterdam#39
We visited Zaanse Schans, a real working 18th century Dutch village.

Amsterdam#42
There was a working wooden shoe factory on the grounds. We took quite a few pictures with all the giant wooden shoes.

Inside we got to watch a worker make an actual pair of wooden shoes!

Amsterdam#51
We got to try them on too and determined that they are VERY uncomfortable.
Amsterdam#52

Amsterdam#56
The windmills at Zaanse Schans performed various tasks such as grinding spices, making oil, sawing wood and producing paint.

Amsterdam#57

Amsterdam#58
People are still living in the village today!

Amsterdam#59

Amsterdam#60
The Netherlands was full of beautiful flowers!

Amsterdam#61
Our next stop was a fishing village called Volendam.

Amsterdam#63

Amsterdam#62
We were making a travel bucket list at lunch and we realized that we only have FIVE more summers with this kiddo before he heads off to college!

Amsterdam#64-2
Sweet Cruz loved his salmon lunch! He doesn't like hamburgers, hot dogs or pizza but will eat fish all day long!

Dutch pancakes were so delicious! The offered a variety of toppings from fruits, to nuts to chocolates to go on top. Our group stuck with powdered sugar!

Amsterdam#70

Amsterdam#68
The water was so chilly!

Amsterdam#71
Ice Cream of course.

Amsterdam#73
We drove an hour and a half south to the little town of Kaatsheuvel. Our hotel was super cute with a mini golf, garden and restaurant on the roof! The kids loved the set up in our room too. It had two sets of queen sized bunk beds and a trundle bed.

Efteling:

Amsterdam#79
The next morning we visited Efteling... the Netherlands version of Disney! We rode all the roller coasters, rode a bunch of "creepy" themed rides and soaked in the European fairy tale magic.

Amsterdam#80
I asked them if we really needed two of these giant popcorns and they insisted they'd eat them, which they did!

Amsterdam#81

Amsterdam#82
This garbage can spoke every time you put something in his mouth. Cora loved it.

Amsterdam#86
Strength doesn't actually unlock this key as we learned after we used google translate on the sign. :) One who is as fair as gold holds the power.

Cool view of the park from the top of one of the rides!

Apenheul & Amstelfort:

Amsterdam#93
Our final day, we drove East to the little town of Appeldorn to visit Apenheul, a free roaming primate zoo.

Amsterdam#96
Some of the monkeys were in enclosures but a good chunk of them roamed freely around the park! It was so cool especially for Cruz who LOVES monkeys.

Amsterdam#97
The kids got good at ordering their own ice cream and counting out the appropriate amount of Euros.

We continued driving North. Our destination was to a hotel near the airport in preparation for our flight the next morning. On the way though, we stopped in the super cute town of Amstelfort. This was the cutest little medieval town also built along canals.

Amsterdam#100

Amsterdam#102
We found a yummy restaurant near the square for dinner! It started raining on our walk back. I still had our ponchos from Efteling in my backpack so we threw those on. I'm not sure the natives of the town were familiar with the concept of a poncho because we got quite a few strange looks and giggles.

AmstelfortRain

That's an official wrap on summer! Less than 48 hours after arriving back home, these three will start school!
